Panoramas have been created probable the next day after the invention of photography. Moreover, in middle of XVIII century the camera obscura had been used in Europe and with this instrument artists drew landscape and architectural panoramas. The well-known Italian artist Antonio Kanaletto (1697-1768) had painted thus the beautiful panoramic views of Venice. In the Library of the Congress, in the photography hall there is the big section devoted to the panoramic photography, its history and development up to our days (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/pnhtml/pnhome.html).

Until recently panoramic photos were created either with special cameras such as "Horizon", or by means of mechanical overlapping of separate photos. Computer technologies have given a new pulse to creative work in this interesting field of photography, and allowed to create "seamless" panoramas using plenty of photos, made with the help of digital or film camera. On our site there are panoramas made by means of various technologies, but in most cases there are film negatives or the slides stitched as a panorama with the help of special computer programs (basically, with the help of the remarkable program The Panorama Factory).

Some miniatures are executed with the use of flash-technology. In the site section "links" you will find Internet addresses which will give you the detailed description of modern panoramic technologies. In process of our site development we plan to create the page devoted to technology of panoramic photography.
The submitted themes and panoramas can not pretend to complete review of our beautiful St.-Petersburg. Moreover, in many cases the views, presented and well familiar to the author, can be seen differently by other eyes. So we invite everyone who is fond of the panoramic photography to joint creativity, to the search of new themes devoted to Panoramic St. Petersburg, to the new artistic and technical decisions.
